Why was it on the news?

Super typhoon Yagi was a tropical storm that affected northern Vietnam and parts of southern China. On September 6, Yagi crossed over Hainan and resulted in power outages affecting 830,000 households (Reuters). Over 574,000 people in Hainan and Guangdong were displaced, and the Hong Kong stock exchange was temporarily closed. The next day, Yagi made landfall in Quang Ninh and Haiphong in northern Vietnam as one of the strongest typhoons to ever hit the country in over a decade (CIRA). Quang Ninh is an important tourist destination known for its limestone islands, while Haiphong is an important industrial hub which is home to factories such as Vietnam’s VinFast electric vehicle brand and Apple supplier Pegatron (Global News) As of September 13, the death toll was at 226 as a result of the storm and the landslides and flash floods following it, according to Vietnam’s disaster agency (CNN World). The typhoon and flooding also damaged hundreds of thousands of hectares of agricultural land and swept away 1,500 aquaculture cages used for breeding fish, according to the local government (Radio Free Asia). Yagi was also the second most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024 after Hurricane Beryl, before Hurricane Milton came in October (Euro News).
