Why was it on the news?
The Alau dam, following extreme rains, collapsed and flooded towns across Borno State in north-east Nigeria (OCHA). According to the United Nations, over 600,000 people in Borno state alone were displaced and at least 100 were killed (CBS News). The dam spewed 540 billion litres of water into Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. Almost 500 cases of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)/suspected Cholera were recorded, adding blow to the region that had already been dealing with militant insurgence (Reuters).
