Why was it on the news?
Typhoon Krathon impacted Kaohsiung which is a major port city in Taiwan. It caused high winds of 126 km/h which brought down trees and it flooded the roads, which prompted schools and businesses to close (CBC). The typhoon resulted in an evacuation of around 11,000 people according to Taiwan’s interior ministry (phys.org). According to Taiwan’s fire department, Krathon injured at least 123 people and caused two casualties, while two people remained missing (CBC). It was labeled by local media as a “weird” storm as it is unusual for a typhoon to directly hit Taiwan’s west coast and also hovered off the coast before reaching land.
