Volcanic eruption
Date
November 4, 2024 (start date), local midnight time.
Location
Flores, Indonesia
Why was it on the news?
The eruption spewed ash up to 2,000 metres high and covered several villages which burned down houses including a convent of Catholic nuns (phys.org). At least 10 people have died from the initial eruption according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency. The agency’s spokesperson, Abdul Muhari, stated that at least 10,000 people have been displaced by the eruption that affected six villages in Wulanggitang District and four villages in Ile Bura district. Another eruption occurred on Sunday, November 24 2024 at 9:56 AM local time (Tempo.co). Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) assigned a danger radius of 7 km, where people are urged not to engage in activities within that radius of the eruption centre. The eruption caused closures of the island’s Komodo International Airport (ANTARA News) and Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport (NusaBali.com), which saw the cancellation of more than 50 domestic and international flights.
